![]() Thickened liquids can change the way that some medications are absorbed (Cichero, 2013). So combined, people feel thirsty and full at the same time all of the time. Thickened liquids also create a feeling of fullness. So even if someone drinks enough thickened liquids to achieve adequate hydration, they may not feel satisfied. They do not offer that satisfying mouth feel when you are thirsty and get a drink of cold water. Cichero (2013) found that thickened liquids do not offer satiety of thirst. Thickened liquids are not very palatable to patients in general. What about the possible negative consequences? What problems might they create? They may also have utility in the short term for individuals in the acute phase of CVA. Elimination of aspiration in the short term may also be important for those with very compromised pulmonary status. Elimination of aspiration can offer relief to patients who cough excessively with thin liquids. Aspiration is just one factor needed for the development of pneumonia. We know that there is not a simple link from aspiration to pneumonia. Thickened liquids have been shown to reduce prandial aspiration. Let’s talk about what the positives of thickened liquids are. My first question would be, are we recommending thickened liquids just to eliminate aspiration or are we taking the whole picture into account? I would be very interested in learning more about the choices made by SLP’s in regards to thickened liquids. This survey did not differentiate the use of thickened liquids as the first choice, second choice, or last choice. Of those, 72% reported recommending nectar thick liquids most frequently and 19% reported they recommended honey thick liquids most frequently. Garcia and Chambers (2008) found that 85% of SLP’s who responded to their survey reported that they believed thickened liquids to be an effective clinical intervention. Since the SafeStraw is made for individuals with swallowing problems, it should be used under the supervision of a professional trained in Dysphagia management. Use with carbonated beverages, or honey thickened liquids will render the SafeStraw ineffective for limiting the volume of consumption.īIO-1500 - Box of 12 White, Thin Liquid SafeStrawsīIO-1510 - Box of 12 Blue, Thick Liquid SafeStrawsīIO-1520 - Variety Pack (6 White and 6 Blue SafeStraws) The Bionix SafeStraw is designed for use with thin, water like liquids, or nectar thickened liquids. Works with a standard straw and a variety of cups. This aids in preventing aspiration of fluids while drinking. Once the float has reached the bottom of the chamber they can safely draw another 6.2ml's of fluid. This break gives them time to control the liquid bolus and safely swallow. Once they stop sucking, the float sinks to the bottom of the chamber. After around 6.2ml's the float reaches the top of the chamber closing it off preventing the patient from receiving more fluid. When the fluid travels through the chamber to the straw, the float rises. As the patient sucks on the straw, fluid flows through the valve and into the chamber. The SafeStraw's fluid chamber limits the patient's fluid intake using a one way valve and a float. Available for nectar thick liquids or thin liquids. ![]() ![]() Reusable design comes apart for easy cleaning with hot water and soap, or the top rack of a non-industrial dishwasher.
